Moving into Stillness by Erich Schiffman is one of my favourite ever yoga books.
When I was doing my teacher training we were asked to read a lot of different books and to be honest.
When you have just started this can be hard going and I found they were either very technical about the poses or very difficult to understand.
I also found some of them difficult to relate to and struggled to see how the ancient yoga texts fitted with our modern day lives.
Another teacher recommended this book and I was absolutely inspired by it.
It transformed the way that I felt about the whole concept of yoga.
His introduction and the following chapters on what it feels like to practice yoga and the different qualities it can evoke is magical.
Then it gets better you get to look at him doing the poses.
In the other books I had studied it always looks as though the person is contorting, forcing themselves into the positions whereas he makes it look so beautiful and effortless.we all know it is not effortless but it was like someone turning on a light bulb for me.
We all know it is not effortless but it was like someone turning on a light bulb for me.
It was his birthday recently, he is still teaching, and I just had to send a message not because he ever directly taught me but simply because he was so instrumental in how all my ideas about yoga shifted.
